Winter weekend fundraiser as Sumburgh Head celebrates Christmas

Christmas at the Light
2nd and 3rd December 2023 from 10am – 3pm.

Christmas is coming! Join us at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and Visitor Centre as it opens for a fundraising winter weekend to kick off the festive season.

Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd December, Sumburgh Head Lighthouse is inviting families and visitors to experience the stunning location out of season. As well as taking in the dramatic views and visitor centre, folk will be able to soak up the festive atmosphere with winter treats, including home bakes courtesy of the Picnic Press. There will be a range of activities to take part in, including Christmas crafts, a treasure hunt and a festive tombola. The gift shop will also be open for stocking fillers and festive gifts. Admission, activities and access to the exhibitions and marine life centre are free but all donations received will go towards transport costs for school visits to Sumburgh Head.

Jane Outram, who manages the site on behalf of the Shetland Amenity Trust explained: “We’re excited to be hosting our second winter fundraiser this December with the 12 Days of Christmas as this year’s theme.

“Last year we fundraised for a lifesaving defibrillator, and thanks to everyone’s generous support, the defibrillator was installed earlier this year. This December we want to raise money towards transport costs for schools wanting to visit Sumburgh Head.

“It’s going to be such a fun weekend and to prepare, we’ve been giving our indoor displays a festive makeover. The Sandyburn Singers will be joining us on the Sunday morning and there will be plenty of crafts, a treasure hunt and colouring competition for bairns. Gillian from the Picnic Press in Dunrossness has kindly offered to bake for us, and refreshments will be available for donations in the café. We really hope folk can join us at the Lighthouse for a fun a joyful weekend.”

The weekend will take place on 2nd and 3rd December from 10.00am – 3.00pm.
