'Sumburgh At War' Walking Tours with Archaeologist Chris Dyer

On Thursday 8th April 2021 we are going to be joined by Chris Dyer, leading ‘Sumburgh at War’ walking tours, taking in all the features relating to the defensive remains at Sumburgh Head, from the Iron Age fortification through to a WWII Naval Radar Station.

In his role as Archaeologist at Shetland Amenity Trust, Chris carried out the original research on the Sumburgh Radar Station that informed the displays and interpretation you can now find in our Visitor Centre. Over two years Chris visited national archives, traced family members and carried out archaeological investigations at Sumburgh Head to piece together a fascinating part of Shetland’s military history.

Outdoor walking tours will be running at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. To book your place, please call the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse Visitor Centre on 01950 461966. Places can also be booked in our Visitor Centre, open Thursdays – Mondays from 10am to 5pm. Please note this tour is free to Sumburgh Head ticketholders.
