Cafe to Open at Sumburgh Head
Views from the Education Centre The Visitor Centre facilities at Sumburgh Head will be opening again for Up Helly Aa this year, along with the much-requested addition of a café service, provided in the Education Centre building.
Between 10.30am and 4.00pm on Sunday 24rd, Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th January, visitors will be able to enjoy the stunning views from the panoramic windows along with a cafetiére of ground coffee, or a choice of specialist teas. Biscuits will also be available along with cakes, freshly made by Marian Armitage. During Wednesday, Marian will present a showcase of Shetland’s food and drink producers.
The café will also be available during the summer months when the Visitor Centre opens for the main season from April. It has been designed to operate on a pop-up basis so that the Education Centre is still available for event hire, school visits and other activities. Details of opening hours will be published on the website in due course.
Visitors will be able to tour the Engine Room, Radar Hut, Smiddy and Marine Life Centre displays over the Up Helly Aa period, with 2016 Season Tickets available from the Gift Shop. This great value ticket provides a full year of visits for one price.
Sumburgh Head Operations Manager, Angela Hunt, said “We had lots of requests from our visitors last year for a space to sit and have a coffee and enjoy the view, and we felt it was important to respond to this feedback. The café will offer high quality produce and still allow us to use the Education Centre space for events and activities.”
