The final element of the funding package for this exceptional project was confirmed in January 2011. Since then work has been continuing with planning consents, designs and the contract tendering process.
Funding for the £5.4million Sumburgh Head project has been awarded from a number of sources, with over £3.7million from national and European funders. This is a significant sum coming into the isles which will benefit the whole area, preserve an important part of our heritage, and create jobs and economic growth in the tourism industry.
European and National funding bodies are made up of:
- European Regional Development Fund
- Heritage Lottery Fund
- Historic Scotland
- The Wolfson Foundation
- Highlands & Islands Enterprise
- Scottish Rural Development Programme
- Scottish Natural Heritage
- Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) – Partner Organisation
Without each and every one of these organisations, this exciting development would not be possible. Shetland Amenity Trust as lead partner are grateful for the assistance and support of these organisations, and the individual members of staff who have worked with us to turn these plans for Sumburgh Head into reality.
